Abingdon Healthfest is one of our favourite events on the local calendar – a sunny (most years!), friendly day on the Abingdon Market Place where residents can meet the many groups that help keep the town well.

This year’s event took place on Saturday 6 September, and we were proud to be there among a brilliant line-up of charities, services and community clubs. The Mayor of Abingdon, Cllr Rawda Jehanli, toured the stalls and spoke with visitors throughout the day, adding to the warm, civic spirit of the event.

Our Day at Abingdon Healthfest
Live-in care as a positive, flexible option
Our team spent the day speaking with families about live-in care, a compassionate form of home care that allows older adults to stay independent in familiar surroundings. We explained how this personalised approach to elderly care can often be a better fit than moving into residential care, especially when routines, pets, or long-term homes matter. Many visitors were especially interested in our short-term respite care services, which give family carers time to rest or offer extra support after hospital discharge.
Appreciation for carers
We also met several people whose loved ones already have a live-in carer. Hearing their stories – and their heartfelt appreciation for the hard work carers do – was a highlight for our team. Those moments of thanks never get old.
A little fun: our Healthfest hamper competition
To keep things light and lively, we ran a “guess the number of hearts in the picture” competition. Congratulations to Irene, who guessed correctly and won a Hattie’s Gifts Afternoon Tea hamper, delivered on Tuesday 23 September!

Civic sparkle
Adding tradition and flair, the Town Crier of Abingdon opened the event – another reminder that Healthfest is as much a celebration of community as it is of health and care.
“It was wonderful to see the residents, local businesses, and charities of Abingdon supporting one another. Dave, the organiser, did a fantastic job of bringing everyone together to promote such an important message about improving people’s health and well-being.” – Isabelle Mumby

Healthfest gives people the chance to ask the questions that really matter to them when it comes to care later in life:
- How does live-in care differentiate from hourly home care?
- What exactly does a live-in carer do day to day?
- How do we match carers to personalities, routines and interests?
- Can we try care short-term first?
- How do families stay involved?
Our answer, as always, is that every Mumby’s care plan is bespoke. We take time to understand the person, the family and the home environment before proposing support. Then we stay close – reviewing regularly and adjusting as needs change.
A big thank-you to Healthy Abingdon for organising such a welcoming event and curating an inspiring mix of local groups – from Age UK Oxfordshire to Dementia Friendly Abingdon, Abingdon Parkrun, SCAS and more.
Thinking about live-in or respite care?
If Healthfest got you thinking, we’re here to help. Book a friendly call with one of our care managers and we’ll:
- Listen to what’s working (and what isn’t).
- Suggest tailored live-in or respite options.
- Explain how we match carers to your loved one.
- Outline next steps at a pace that suits you.
See you at next year’s Healthfest – same spirit, same sunshine (we hope!!), and the same commitment to keeping Abingdon thriving at home.
